Workshop – Hobart 9-10 February 2017: National Travelling Exhibitions

The AMMC began a collaboration with the Australian National Maritime Museum in 2013 to develop travelling exhibitions suitable for both large and small exhibition spaces. The first successful exhibition was ‘War at Sea’ which was presented both as a full-scale travelling exhibition for major maritime museums and as a flat-pack exhibition for smaller institutions, libraries and clubs.

The concept has proved popular and the AMMC and ANMM are continuing the collaboration with the aim, over time, of creating a small bank of travelling exhibitions. The aim is to develop the exhibitions so that they will include objects from local collections to make the exhibitions even more relevant to individual museums.

The next AMMC Regional Workshop in Hobart on 9-10 February 2017 will explore this concept with AMMC delegates. Both the style of presentation and exhibition themes will be workshopped.

Day 1 – 9 February - in Hobart will be an exhibition development workshop covering various aspects of exhibition development including labelling, design and object display, with practical sessions where we will jointly work up content for an exhibition that will then be produced and tour nationally.

Shipwrecks will be one of the themes to be considered. Almost every maritime museum has them and visitors love them.

So please join us in Hobart. We can work together to create touring exhibitions and, in the process, we’ll get to know each other and learn tips and tricks for creating an exhibition.

The Hobart Workshop delegate fee will be held low due to the generosity of the ANMM’as outreach program and a limited number of bursaries for travel may be available.

More details to follow, but please register your initial interest in the workshop at We’ll be in touch and hope to see you there!

If you can’t come to Hobart, don’t worry, the next regional workshop will be at the Jervis Bay Maritime Museum in NSW in the Spring of 2017. Please still register your interest at

An important PS:  We suggest you book accommodation in Hobart as soon as possible as the AMMC Workshop runs up to the start of the 2017 Australian Wooden Boat Festival and rooms can be hard to find. You will need to arrive on Wednesday 8 February ready for a full day workshop on Thursday 9th. Friday’s workshop session on the 10th will end in time to catch afternoon flights home.
