Proud Ngarrinjeri Elder, Uncle Moogy Sumner made the first traditional Ngarrindjeri /Boandik tree canoe in over 100 years. Won a Hero award at the 2010 MyHero International Film Festival and second prize for Moogys Yuki in the community film category.

“I’ve was involved in making a canoe before but as soon as I saw it, I knew it was the right tree. We asked the spirit of the tree that we have permission to do this and permission from the ancestors, asked them to be here”

“We need to keep it going, to work it out ourselves, no-one did it for them, and they worked it out for themselves” - Moogy Sumner

“Thinking about how my ancestors did this hundreds of years ago, no cherry picker, it’s amazing”
We were up there for five ours, only a sip of water each, we were at one with the tree” - Cyril Trevorrow
